Minorities and women urged to attend apprenticeship fair

Doreen Cannon was a featured guest on America’s Work Force Radio. The President of Plumbers Local 55 and head of the Cleveland Building and Construction Trades Council Tradeswomen Committee discussed an upcoming apprenticeship fair.Minorities and women are encouraged to attend the apprenticeship fair, which is scheduled for Oct. 24 at the Pipefitters Local 120 Hall, located at 6305 Halle Drive in Cleveland, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.Cannon said nearly all of the CBCTC affiliated unions are busy and need more apprentices. The area’s building trades leaders expect to remain busy for at least another 24 months, which makes this an excellent time to begin a career as a building trades apprentice.Members from 13 trades will be on-hand at the apprenticeship fair to answer any questions attendees may have.Joining a registered apprenticeship allows men and women to earn while they learn, which means they earn a livable wage while working alongside journeymen, learning the tricks of their trade, while also taking mandatory classroom instruction to improve their skillset and keep them safe the job.Nearly all apprenticeships offer free college credit towards an associate degree.Cannon said a building trades apprenticeship is one of the best kept secrets, but she and many other building trades members, are working hard to let the public know about the great career opportunities that begin with a building trades apprenticeship.Click here to listen to the entire segment from America’s Work Force Radio.
