“It was an honor to receive this award,” said Martin. “To be recognized by my peers is tremendous.”

On the national level, Martin serves as the chair of various SMACNA committees, including the Contractors Operations Manual Task Force, where he is leading the development of a new library of business books to enhance the productivity and profitability of his fellow SMACNA contractors. Last year, he joined the national SMACNA Board of Directors and this year, was appointed to the SMACNA/SMART Best Practices Market Expansion Task Force.

Since 2014, Martin has served as the President of SMACNA Cleveland. During his time as chapter president, Martin was instrumental in creating and developing programs for SMACNA’s contractor education, training, safety and industry events.

On both the local and national level, he is actively engaged and provides input to other contractors on how to be successful in the industry. He understands the importance of open communication and engaging with all involved in the project, including project owners, general contractors, architects and vendors.

Perhaps overlooked by some businesses, Martin said this is what helps his company stand out from the pack.

“We are very strong in collaborating, communicating and giving options and ideas to meet the budget,” he said.

Those facets, along with good quality work, allow him to sell value to perspective clients as a union contractor. While not a sheet metal worker, Martin traces his industry roots back two generations, as his grandfather and father were both union sheet metal workers.

Founded in 1985 by his father, Thomas H. Martin, T.H. Martin is a family-owned business that provides sheet metal and mechanical services across Northeast Ohio. Tom Martin is a partner with his brother Mike.

The company is signatory to three Cleveland-area unions: Sheet Metal Workers Local 33, Plumbers Local 55 and Pipefitters Local 120.

T.H. Martin has a 50,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art fabrication shop, which produces over one million pounds of sheet metal a year. Depending on the projects, they employ 150 to 200 tradesmen at any given time.

Some of their well-known projects include the American Greetings World Headquarters in Westlake, Akron Children’s Hospital (IPD), Ben Venue Laboratories, the Cleveland Clinic, University Hospital’s North Ridgeville Heath Center, Progressive Field and the Browns training complex in Berea.

The Cleveland Building and Construction Trades Council congratulates Tom Martin for being named the 2018 SMACNA Contractor of the Year.
