Focus votes on what’s best for our work

Richard Cordrary and Betty Sutton

Executive Secretary, CBCTC

Brothers and Sisters, with the November gubernatorial election approaching, I felt it was important to begin reaching out to you monthly to make some brief observations regarding our candidates for Governor and Lieutenant Governor. With that said, you can expect to see this column in each Labor Citizen edition we produce from now until the election.

The two sides that you will choose from on the ballot have differing opinions on many issues. Some of those issues are important to us as building trades union members and some are not. What I’m going to ask each of you to do is to focus first on what’s important to you as a building trades member who relies on a robust economy and a good union wage to earn a living.

What I’m going to ask each of you to do next, is to disregard everything else.

I know at this point you may all be wondering why I would ask you to do something like that. The simple reason can be best stated with a question. What else really even matters if you don’t have a job and can’t earn a good union wage? Again, this is the approach that I’m asking you all to take when reading this column.

The Cleveland Building and Construction Trades Council has unanimously endorsed Rich Cordray and Betty Sutton for Governor and Lieutenant Governor respectively. Rich Cordray fought for us when he was Ohio’s Attorney General. He cracked down hard on non-union contractors that cheated by not paying the prevailing wage that’s legally required to be paid on public projects! He went after non-union contractors that misclassified their employees as independent contractors so that they didn’t have to pay the taxes for which they are legally liable! By the way, those are the same taxes that you and I pay!

Brothers and Sisters, I implore you to look at these issues first when deciding who you’ll vote for on Nov. 6. This is not an issue of who’s a Republican or who’s a Democrat. This is about making sure that there’s a future in Ohio for each and every one of you as a skilled building trades member. It’s also about assuring that you’ll have the ability to earn that good union wage. Ultimately, I respect your decision to choose, but please continue to read this column because each month there will be new information regarding our endorsement and the candidates.
